The stock market is one of the surest way and the best place to invest your money. Stock market investing is like investing on online casinos especially in terms of the risks. Both can give you sure winnings if you just know how. But unlike the other games of chance, stock market investing is legal and you don’t just depend on chances. You must have the knowledge of the market you are investing in and you must have the tactics that really work. As a starter you can’t just go on a certain investment, you must first know how to start investing in the stock market before you can experience the roller coaster ride of the stock market.

The ups and downs or the highs and lows, these are the things that you must know when learning how to start investing in the stock market. The stock market is an ever-changing world. The stocks and investments in the stock market undergo changes in almost every tick of the clock. A good investor must be updated with these changes and he must know how he can benefit on the said changes. He must also know what those changes can do to his investments or stocks. To do this, extensive research is needed especially by the first-timers in the trade. If you are a novice in the stock market you must have the right knowledge that you need to understand the ideas and the principles of the stock exchange.

If you have done your research and you know you can do it in the stock market don’t be too excited. Don’t go directly into investing in the stock exchange, even if you have the best strategy the probability of success on your first try is very low. So to avoid possible loses and avoid frustrations, better have a practice first. You can practice your stock market ideas and strategies on paper trades to know the possible outcome of your trade. The paper trade works like a real stock market trade only that it doesn’t involve real money. You can use this trade to test your strategies and to find other ways on how to start investing in the stock market, the real stock market.

Seek for advice from the experienced stock market investors. Most of them might tell you to start it small. You can invest small amounts in the trade. By this way you can practice your knowledge and strategy with lower risks involved. You might be successful or not but what’s important is that if you lose, you just lose a little. If you win much better, you can still try and continue to grow. Do your research on the trades and the entire stock market information, have your strategy and practice it, and start it small and take one step at a time, these must be the answers to your question asking how to start investing in the stock market.

The best method to foresee stock trends is through technical analysis. It is common practice in the stock market and allows investors and traders to predict stock fluctuations by studying charts and various indicators. Technical analysis is completely independent of any type of research on the company’s intrinsic value or the field and type of business they are in. Technical analysis only looks at past price and volume movements of the company’s stock.

Investors who use technical analysis are usually short-term traders who only hold their position for short amounts of time until their desired price target is reached. It is not recommended to use technical analysis for long positions because it does not account for the work the business does. This typically means it doesn’t look at factors like company’s growth projections or future goals.

The whole foundation of technical analysis is supported under the idea that share prices move in patterns determined by how the market sells and buys stock as a whole. It takes the entire market as a collective person that has a resounding trading pattern. This is primarily based on market psychology and past market behavior. This also accounts for historical events like natural disasters or economic crises and how the company’s stock movements have reacted accordingly to each of these events. This study of the market is vital for any successful technical trader. The key to good trading for technical analysts is to know the best times to enter the market and how long to hold their position so to make a profit.

When a trader understands these patterns they can generally predict how share prices will turn and use this knowledge to their favor. This will tell them what items to add or remove from their portfolio. Generally if traders are wrong about their predictions they should keep fail-safes and have a viable exit strategy. This is primarily what stop losses are. Traders will have a minimum price of where a stock can reach before they exit to cut their losses.

There are many indicators when it comes to studying charts. The main and most common indicators are based on ‘Support’ and ‘Resistance’. Most stock prices fluctuate up and down, so when a stock is moving down is does not technically indicate that it is on a down trend and vice-versa if it is moving up. Stocks generally move in wave patterns and remain between their support and resistance. If a stock breaks either then it is said to have a new support/resistance and this price can be predicted. These are times when a lot of traders will have to choose to hold their positions or leave.

Charts

Technical analysis is strongly dependent on studying charts to track stock movements. Bar Charts are commonly used for beginner traders. A bar chart will generally consist of bars which show the opening and closing price and whether the price has fallen or risen.

Another, more useful chart is the candlestick chart. This is a Japanese form of technical analysis that has growing popularity in the west. It is said to be more accurate in predicting price movements compared to bar charts. Each candlestick shows the stocks opening and closing prices in the ‘candle’ and also shows the highs and lows of the day in the ‘flint’. Red or black candles indicate that the stock closed lower then it opened and white or green ‘candles’ indicate the opposite. Each of these candlesticks is an indicator of future movements. A small red bodied candle with small flints is a sign of a downward trend. A green bodied stock with short flint however indicates an upward movement is coming. There are many other candlestick indicators like shooting-stars and hang-mans that predict different movements.

Stock market trading is something that can be very exciting as well as nerve racking and stressful. The reason that online stock market trading is so appealing to beginners is because of the possibility of making hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a matter of hours. Though these greatly successful trades do come, they do not happen as often as many people wish. Knowledge is the key to being successful on online stock trading.

The knowledge that needs to be understood by stock market trading beginners is the ability to know when to pull the trigger on a stock and when to sell it. This is the key to making any money at all and staying in the game. When someone can find out a strategy and some market signals that work well for them, they can be enormously successful.

One thing that I highly recommend for anyone who is looking into online stock market trading for beginners is an online course to learn the basics. Some of these courses are free and some will cost a fee. Either type will likely teach you most of the basics you need to know.

I also recommend that you sign up with some sort of signals service, especially if you are looking to get into day trading. There are many of these but I believe that the best one is a product called Doubling Stocks. This product has been shown to pick the right stocks and when to buy and sell them a very good percentage of the time. Obviously, sometimes these stock pickers are wrong. However, when you find one that is reliable, the potential earnings could really surprise you.

These are just a couple of things to think about when looking for information about online stock market trading for beginners. The stock market is very complex but with the right tools you could make some serious cash even as a beginner.

With the recent wild ebbs and flows of the stock market, perhaps a brief history of the stock market will put things in better perspective.

Historians disagree about when in the murky past a stock market was formed. It is suggested by the historian Fernand Braudel that Muslim and Jewish merchants had in effect set up everything that was needed to trade with credit in 11th Century Cairo. Was this trade the beginnings of present day stock markets? In the 12th Century the French regulated and traded debts of agricultural communities. Were these the first brokers?

While the beginnings of stock markets worldwide are shrouded in the fog of history, the history of the American stock markets and Wall Street are much clearer. Boston was the early financial center of America. Bonds and commodities were traded largely by Boston Dealers.

It was not until 1792 that Wall Street became the center of stock trade. It was there that the first organized United States stock exchange was created. Other countries such as England and France had long since established stock exchanges, but this first American stock exchange would grow to become the center of world stock trading.

The New York Stock Exchange was created under a buttonwood tree in what is now Battery Park by John Sutton, Benjamin Jay, and other financial leaders. In 1849 the American Stock Exchange was formed. This exchange was used for many years by companies that did not meet the listing requirements of the New York Stock Exchange.

The American Stock Exchange was purchased by the NASDAQ exchange in 1998. The NASDAQ, which stands for the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation, was founded in 1971. This electronic stock exchange is now the largest in the world in terms of shares traded.

The markets have had many ups and downs over the years. The most notable crash was the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929. Largely because of very high margin rates, the speculative market began a decline that would eventually lead the to the Great Depression.

The markets have also enjoyed boom times such as the technology bubble of the 1990′s. During the decade, it seemed as if every stock even loosely related to technology saw its price rise many fold. This bubble burst as all bubbles do. There then followed a period of correction which was itself followed by a more normal market.

As this brief history of the stock markets illustrates, the stock market serves as a pricing mechanism with many excesses. At certain times, there exists a buying fever. Prices rise far higher than they would in a more rational market.

At other times, when fear and uncertainty hold the markets in their twin grips, prices fall. Many bargains can be found by the speculator with patience and deep pockets.

A historical perspective of the stock market can help you avoid the pitfalls of extreme market conditions. Such a perspective can also allow you to take advantage of the opportunities these extreme conditions create. Study the history of the stock market and you can become a better investor.

Learn stock market trading at the begining, by starting with the history.

The Stock Market does have physical locations, however, every time we talk about the Stock Market we seem to mean a different dimension, not a physical location.

Wall Street, also known as the Dow, or the NYSE, is located in New York

Wall Street is the Address(or is it?)

Many people think of Wall Street and the Stock Market as one in the same, and indeed, it used to be that way.

Dutch settlers initially built a stockade here in 1653 for defense purposes.
In 1685 the stockade was torn down and a street was built called Wall Street.
In 1790 the first Stock Exchange was founded in Philadelphia which became the model for the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1817 the NYSE was officially opened.
The NYSE was moderately successful till the early 1900′s when the market entered a boom period which lasted more or less until 1929.

This boom period of course could not last forever, things were so out of kilter that people were mortgaging their homes and leveraging themselves to the limit to buy shares.
The boom period crashed in 1929 and caused the Great Depression.

The 1929 Crash was caused in part by the fact that the Stock Market was virtually unregulated, which it remained even until after the market crash of 1987 which saw the Dow suffer what was the largest losing day in the Market’s history.

Black Tuesday – October 29th, 1929.

On Black Tuesday, a record of 16.4 million shares were traded and the ticker tape fell behind two and a half hours. On Monday, the stock market suffered a record one-day loss of around 13 percent. On Black Tuesday, the market suffered a loss of about 12 percent and did not recover for 22 years.

The economy eventually recovered from its catastrophic losses but the unregulated Stock Market practices that had partially caused the crash in the 1929 still existed and caused the stock market crash of 1987, which saw the Dow Jones suffer what was the largest single-day loss in the stock market’s history.

Today’s Stock Market

Today’s stock market consists of about 500,000 computers all networked with dealers for the NYSE or market makers for the NASDAQ. Up until recently the Dow still used human intervention but at present all trades are computerized.

The 2 most important stock market networks are the NYSE and NASDAQ.
NASDAQ is a relatively new Stock Trading System that has been computerized since its inception, where market makers normally lead trades.

It used to be that more risky stocks were traded on the NASDAQ than on the NYSE, but that distinction is fading.

The difference between the NYSE and Nasdaq is in the way securities on the exchanges are transacted between buyers and sellers.

The Nasdaq is a dealer’s market, wherein market participants are not buying from and selling to one another but to and from a dealer, which, in the case of the Nasdaq, is a market maker.

The NYSE is an auction market, wherein individuals are typically buying and selling to each other and there is an auction happening; the highest bidding price will be matched with the lowest asking price.

All these computers are linked to computers worldwide. These computers can be found in banks, small businesses, and large corporations.

These computers comprise the banking networks which make computerized transactions possible.
To give you an idea as to how much gets traded: in New York City Stock Market Trades amount to over $2.2 trillion dollars daily

How has the U.S. Stock Market done in Times of War?

The worst Stock Market returns were achieved during the Vietnam War.If this happened because of the uncertainty of the times is a good question. Stock Markets do not like uncertainty and will act negatively.

Returns during the Korean War however were excellent and averaged about 18% per year while 2nd world war returns averaged about 13% per year.

The 1987 Stock Market Crash.

The crash of 1987 was one of the most remarkable financial catastrophies of the 20th century, perhaps since the start of the financial system several centuries ago. Why it was so strange because it should not have happened and even today we cannot fully comprehend that it did happen.

Markets fell, an unbelievable 23%, and that they did so all over the world at the same time.
It only lasted one day.

There is no explanation. No definite reason for the crash has been isolated.
The best that one can say is that there were too many similarities to the 1929 crash and that this became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Even if you are disciplined and organized you will end up losing your money, unless you are able to develop a considerable trading edge over the other traders. In this article, I discuss some elements that I use in my trading edge.

Fundamental Analysis

Fundamental analysis is the process of evaluating the financial condition of a company using financial reports, price/earning ratios, revenues, market share, sales and growth, etc. This type of analysis can be time consuming so instead of going through pages of financial reports, I simply look at IBD ratings.

I like to use Investor’s Business Daily (IBD found at investors.com) to get a quick overview of a stock. The IBD rating covers:

Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating: tells me a stock’s average short term (recent quarters) and long term (last three years) earning growth rate. The number I see is how the company compares to all other companies. The scale runs from 1 to 99, 99 being the best.

Relative Price Strength (RS) Rating: Measures a stock’s relative price change in the last 12 months in comparison to all other equities. The scale runs from 1 to 99, 99 being the best.

Industry Relative Price Rating: Compares a stock’s industry price action in the last 6 months to the other 196 industries in IBD’s industry list. The scale is from A to E, A being the best.

Sales + Profit Margins + ROE (Return on Equity) Rating: Crunches a firm’s sales growth rate during the last 3 quarters, before and after profit margins and return on equity into one letter. The scale is from A to E, A being the best.

Accumulation/Distribution rating: Applies a formula of price and volume changes in the last 13 weeks to determine if it is being accumulated or distributed. A = heavy buying, C = Neutral, E = heavy selling.

If you like the idea of including fundamental analysis into your trading plan, consider trading only stocks that meet some minimum requirements – for example A or B, > 70, etc.

I like to use fundamental ratings for longer term trades such as the ones I plan on weekly charts. It is not really useful if you trade intraday.

Technical Analysis

Fundamental analysis is great to build a list of strong stocks, or as a way to filter out weak stocks, but that’s about it. It does not provide you with an objective method to enter and exit trades. All my trading decisions (entry, exit, and stops) are based on technical analysis.

Technical analysis is the study of prices. The price action draws patterns on charts and because human behavior can be repetitive, the price patterns can also be repetitive.

You can choose from a variety of chart types. The Japanese candlestick charts are by far the best and it is the only form you need. There are entire books dedicated to the study of candlestick patterns – if you are serious about studying candlestick charts, look at books written by Steve Nison and and Gregory L. Morris.

Support and Resistance: The most important concept in technical analysis is Support and Resistance. It forms the foundation for every trading decision and could cover many pages but I will limit myself to simplified definitions and a couple examples:

Support level: A price level that a declining market or stock failed to penetrate
Example: the low of the previous day forms an area of support and is often used as a stop loss.

Resistance level: A price level that a rising market or stock failed to break through
Example: a prior high in an uptrend forms an area of resistance and can be used as a minimum objective to take some profits.

Some technical indicators may also provide some support and resistance, for example moving averages, in part maybe because so many traders expect it.

- Oscillators

An oscillator is a technical indicator that tells you at a glance whether a market or a stock currently trades in an “overbought” or “oversold” condition. Some traders use oscillators to forecast a change of direction. Some examples include the RSI, Stochastic Oscillator, and MACD.

There are hundreds of oscillators and technical indicators. I personally look at them to filter out some stocks if I have too many good ones to choose from. I never use them as a signal to open or close a trade.

- Public Sentiment

I look for support and resistance on the VIX (Volatility Index) daily chart to anticipate reversals.

I look at the Put/Call Ratio (5 MA and 10 MA) on the daily chart to see if traders are too bearish (MAs > 0.8) or too bullish (MAs < 0.5).

(MA = Moving Average)

- Market internals to see if the market is overbought or oversold

I look at the TRIN (5 MA and 10 MA) on the daily chart – overbought (MAs < 0.8) or oversold (MAs > 1.2).

I look at the McClellan Oscillator – the market is overbought if it rises above +70 and oversold if drops below -70. A buy signal is generated if it falls into the oversold area (-70 to -100) and then turns up – a sell signal is generated if it rises into the overbought area (+70 to +100) and then turns down. If it goes beyond the -100/+100 levels then it may be a sign of continuation of the current trend.

- Market and Industries

I like to buy stocks from industries in a strong uptrend and short stocks from industries in a downtrend. I also consider the direction of the industry for the day (positive or negative).
Putting it all together

This article is not about teaching you how to develop an edge but hopefully it shows you that there are many different tools that can be used to improve your odds. It takes time to find a combination that fits your personality. It takes time to find what works for you.

A reliable and affordable stockbroker is one of the first things you’ll need when you’re interested in investing in the stock market. A very high priced person that was extremely hard to understand is how stockbroker seen. But now they have begun to make their services cheaper to obtain and in such a way that is easier to understand, stockbrokers have become much different in tody’s world. An extremely wonderful change because you will not be able to trade in any way, shape, or form without a stockbroker.

One of the major rules within the stock market is that no person is allowed to trade within the stock market unless they are a certified stockbroker. A stockbroker, within the United Kingdom twelve million investor’s trade in the stock market, performs every trade that occurs and each one has enlisted the services of a stockbroker.

So you are probably now wondering, what exactly can a stockbroker do for me? There is a wide range of abilities and services that any stockbroker can offer you, at the same time there are also various ranges of fees that will be collected from them. Typically, a stockbroker will charge a commission, a set fee, or some combination of the two. In regards to the services a stockbroker can offer you, there are three basic levels that include only execution, portfolio management, and advice.

When a stockbroker only deals with the selling and buying of particular shares, per the instructions you give them, this is generally called execution only or in softer terms dealing only. With this type of service, they do not offer you any type of advice on any action you want perform. Typically, investors that are experienced or novice in investing will use this type of service. Execution only is cheaper and extremely efficient the fees the stockbroker charges can range anywhere between £20 to hundreds of pounds, this will depend on the specific stockbroker you choose.

Portfolio management is extremely detailed and the most expensive type of service performed and dealing with advice is typically a little more expensive than execution only, because the stockbroker will offer advice and views on what is happening within the stock market. The stockbroker at this level of service will also take the time to explain anything you may not understand very well.

Within the portfolio management service, you can separate these into two other categories these are advisory and discretionary. When under the advisory category, the stockbroker will create a proposal of a portfolio for you; however, he or she will not take any action without express permission from you. Within the discretionary category, your stockbroker will completely run all aspects of your portfolio and will give you reports as needs on how the portfolio is working.
